Advanced Sheet Metal Estimating
Turning Your Takeoff into a Winning Proposal! This program will help estimators to think differently about the estimating process, and how to approach each opportunity realistically. Estimators will learn not to look at the estimate as a number, but more as a process from job inception to job completion. This program will allow attendees to think more like a business person, and to take more of a big picture approach to the estimation process rather than just doing takeoffs and providing numbers. Topics to be covered include: customers types, the pre-bid qualification process, what foreman and superintendents say about the best estimators, contracts, various project options, how to protect your company’s interest, internal communication, job kick-off meetings, scheduling and general conditions, traps and snares and opportunities. Attendees will also participate in a case study. |

SMACNA’s Reference Manual for Labor Units
This manual provides users with a source of labor unit data required to fabricate and install heating, ventilation and air conditioning materials and equipment. Kevin Dougherty will discuss important features of the manual and demonstrate its use including a new electronic spreadsheet feature which calculates adjustments in the 138 labor unit tables for project types and non-typical shop and job site conditions. |
|
| Who
is presenting: |
|
Mr. Kevin Dougherty who is affiliated with SMACNA National |
| Who
should attend: |
|
TSM members who want to turn their takeoff into a winning proposal. |
|
Your Industry Standards Committee has combined the above two listed SMACNA educational programs to make an interesting application into how to use the new reference manual for labor units.

To All Employers Of Local 30 Sheet Metal Apprentices
September 17, 2012
|
| |

|
|
The night school program for Local 30 sheet metal apprentices will start at the end of September and run for 20 weeks. There will be 11 classes, 3 phases, involving a total of approximately 250 students. Please refer to the following General Outline for details.
Your assistance is solicited in having you verify that your apprentice(s) has received the notification and will be attending classes. If the apprentice(s) is no longer employed by your company, has not received a notification, or indicates that he/she will encounter difficulties attending classes, you are asked to contact, or have them contact, the Association Office at 905-886-9627 or by emailing Alice Sturk at
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
.
Attendance will be enforced in accordance with the current Collective Agreement and employers are going to be asked to support action against apprentices who refuse to attend classes. If the industry is to develop capable, confident and qualified journeymen, it must insist on compliance with approved apprentice training programs. Local Union No. 30 and the Employers have a responsibility to ensure that the sheet metal industry and its workers are positioned and prepared to meet the ever-changing technology that buyers of construction require and demand.
Night School Program General Outline
The night school program is co-sponsored and administered by the Toronto Sheet Metal Contractors Association and Local Union No. 30 through the Local Joint Apprenticeship Committee (LJAC). The program is set up in three phases and each phase runs for 20 weeks, one night per week, usually three hours per class. Apprentices are required to complete the three phases of this program in addition to the day school program. The material covered at night school is to supplement on the job training and to reinforce a number of the day school courses. The material covered by the night school program has been approved, by the LJAC, as part of the apprenticeship-training requirement.
The Ministry of Colleges and Universities has agreed that full attendance and successful completion of each night school phase will result in a credit of 60 hours against the total apprentice-training program of 9,000 hours.
The registration fee process will be as follows:
- Apprentices will be charged a nominal $50.00 registration fee which will be collected by the instructor on the first night of classes. Apprentices will receive a receipt for the $50.00 fee. Following compliance with attendance requirements and successful completion of all three phases, the registration fee will be reimbursed.
- Registration costs associated with the training centre or school will be paid by the LJAC. There may be other registration requirements to be completed by the apprentice for the schools records; this registration should be done on the first class night.
Prizes are awarded to the top two students in each class, $150.00 for first place and $100.00 for second. All apprentices who complete their course successfully receive a Certificate of Achievement.
At the end of the year, top 5th year apprentices compete for the Colin Gordon Trophy and $300 cash 1st place/$200 cash 2nd place. Top Phase 3 students compete for the Ron Browne Memorial Trophy and $200 cash prize. The winner and first runner-up of the Colin Gordon Trophy advance to the Ontario Apprentices Competition.
Each year in May the LJAC sponsors an awards presentation to honour Phase 3 graduates, top students in each class, and the competition winners. Certificates, registration fee refunds and prizes are presented to the apprentices. Employer representatives are invited to present prizes to the competition winners.
All cost associated with the program, including sheet metal supplies and supplementary fee paid to the teachers, are shared by the Association and Local Union No. 30.

SMACNA Project Managers Institute
The Toronto Sheet Metal Contractors Association, Toronto SMACNA Chapter is contemplating holding a SMACNA Project Managers Institute Program at the Ontario Sheet Metal Workers Training Center in late October or early November if significant interest is expressed by our contractors. We would require a minimum of fifteen participants with a maximum of twenty.
The attached sheets provide the Program Description, Target Audience and Instructors as well as giving insight into the programs time lines.
This program is traditionally provided by SMACNA in the southern portion of the United States and with a course cost of $2,200 plus dinners, hotel accommodations and air travel costs. This cost of attendance may be prohibitive.
The anticipated cost for holding the program at our center would be $1,950 per attendee. The cost includes breakfast and lunch each day. For those requiring overnight accommodations we can tie into the preferred rates negotiated at local hotels by our Training Centre for in-school apprentices.
If your firm has an interest in having one or two of your key individuals participate in the program, please complete the lower part of this bulletin and fax or E-mail it back to the Association Office.

Construction Specifiers “No Frills” Trade Show
As in recent years, the Association will be participating in the Construction Specifiers No Frills Trade Show. This is a simple table top show that attracts a large number of construction designers, specifiers and buyers. Reports from members who have participated in the past directly connected bid requests from the display of their literature at this show.
This is your opportunity to get your firms promotional literature in front of these people. The Association will be promoting our membership in general and will also display one piece of literature per member firm for those firm’s wishing to provide materials.
Please have twenty-five to fifty copies of the literature and accompanying business cards you wish to display delivered to the Association office by Thursday, March 1, 2012 for inclusion in the show.
